This is the small island Neuwerk (3 square kilometers) in the North Sea.

IPB Image

And this tower (built in the 14th century) is its landmark. (word?)

IPB Image

And although I grew up near the North Sea and have lived here almost all my life (with the exception of six years), I had never been to that particular island (but had always wanted to). So I finally made it yesterday.

What's special about this iland is that you can reach it by boat like every other island, or by Wattwagen
IPB Image

or if you're the active type you can cross the 12 km of shoal (word?)on foot.
IPB Image
Now you may guess which way I went over... wink.gif

And if you plan to stay overnight you can stay in some comfortable hotel rooms or if you're the adventurous type you can stay in one of the hayhotels.
IPB Image

The island (like so many other islands in the North Sea) is a great place for people who enjoy some solitude and quietness. No cars are allowed on the island, so all you hear is the clattering of horse hoofs and the noise of the seagulls.

Well, I guess I felt like telling you a picture story..... [wink.gif]

Just two days, ded, but even those two days were soo relaxing. The water in the North Sea is always cold. It was 20° Celsius yesterday, which is 'warm' up here. wink.gif

They do that in the North of the Netherlands too, some swear by it, me, i never saw the point of walking in mud that is sometimes up to your thighs, boats were invented for a reason.

Btw, where exactly would this be, the Frisian Islands (East?, not the Wadden Eilanden Dutch bit), or the ones off the west coast of Holstein (or whatever that area is called)?

Since the 'Wattwagen' go back and forth between the island of Neuwerk and the continent there is a hard path that you can walk on. In a few places you can sink into the mud, but only ankle-deep. If people sunk in to their thighs on a distance of 12 km they'd never reach the island in time before the flood came back. wink.gif

This island is 12 km north of Cuxhaven (city), it belongs to the state of Hamburg and neither falls into the category of the East-Frisian Islands (west of Neuwerk, along the coast of Niedersachsen) nor the North-Frisian islands (along the coast of Schleswig-Holstein).

Is anyone here an island fan? I sure am. And I particularly like small islands that give you the 'island feeling' because you can see the water on both (or all) sides. If the weather is good enough we'll go (fly) to Baltrum tomorrow (another small island (Eastfrisian island) in the North Sea). Baltrum has great dunes and a lovely beach.

IPB Image

Unfortunately, a holiday on these islands is expensive. Spending a fortnight on one of these islands is just as expensive as a two-week-holiday in a five-star-hotel in Turkey. I wish they'd lower the prices, but that is wishful thinking...

If Neuwerk Island is too expensive, perhaps you should consider Newark, New Jersey!!! Here's a pic to whet your appetite...

I can find Cuxhaven, but not Neuwerk. Is it the smaller one next to Scharhorn (unnamed in my European road atlas)? Both are in Hamburg state.

Here, cymru, take a look at this map:

IPB Image

orange = Cuxhaven and its suburbs
yellow = the part of the sea that is covered with water at high tide

The two islands Nigehörn and Scharhörn can be reached on foot as well, but they are not inhabited. A breeding place for lots of birds...

Lol.
Well, that 'Neuwark' sure increased its population faster than this
'Neuwerk'. wink.gif

Probably you guys remember the island 'Neuwerk' from the famous book 'The riddle of the sands' by Erskine Childers.

I am, but prefer warmer areas - where coconuts are falling to ground, and white beaches invite to rest before hopping in turquoise colored seas.

*nods in agreement*. Cayolevantado is a tiny island in the Carribean Sea (Dominican Republic) where they made our Bacardi Rum advertisments. I'd love to go there sometime...

Ah, Dominican Republic. Once you should make it over, there is a nice little hotel at the Northern coast, close to Samana and Las Terrenas. It's called Hotel Atlantis, about 12 rooms. The hotel is build like an old fashioned pirates house, and there is a wonderful 6km white beach. And most important, less touristic.

But my heart belongs to the Iles Société, where you still find places to dance the Tamure and have a Ta'ama'ara'a in traditional style.

Thanks for the tip. The semi-island of Samana is another place I'd like to visit some day...
I did make it to the Dominican Republic once (three years ago), and went on a one-day excursion to the island of Saona. It was paradise on earth to me. The island is not inhabited so one cannot stay there but only go there for a few hours throughout the day. (Which is why Cayolevantado with its one hotel is so attractive). If you run a google search, you'll see lots of beautiful pics of Saona.

Susanne,

Les Iles Société (the 'Gesellschaftsinseln', or Society Islands), are part of French Polynesia (Central/South Pacific = Südsee). Tahiti, Moorea, Huahine, Taahaa, Bora Bora are the most famous ones (and crowded). Besides those, you'll find also the islands of Gambiers and the Marquesas over there (and many hidden little paradises).

Allthough the Polynesians adopt more and more the 'benefits' of modern society, there are many places where you still can feel the charme of their life-style. I like their culture a lot, IMO one of the best societies human ever created.

When I was at Dominican Republic, they've talked about Sanoa. But being very lazy during that time, the days on the lonely beach around the hotel have been enough action, so no excursions to any place.

If I should do another trip to the Carribean, Cuba will be the place to visit. Good to sail around, and friends told me wonderful stories about the island and the people.

Looks like you're travelling a lot too, what places did you discover so far?

Thanks for explaining, Targan Khan. So you do acutally live in French
Polynesia? (I thoght it was a joke...) How come? Why did your German/Czek/Slovaki/Russian family move over there?

I can't really give you a precise answer to the question which nice places I've discovered. Each place I've been to had its own charme and beauty. The Carribean was outstanding, I like the whole Mediterranean area a lot, I really enjoyed Israel and I miss the States....

But I haven't really travelled the world, far from it.

Hold on, hold on!

Actual I'm still paying Eichels taxes (pls see the other thread at Babel). I've visited French Polynesia several times, and do have plans to move out of Germany sooner or later, whereas New Zealand and French Polynesia would be the goal to move.

Sorry for the confusion (my fault, but when I write about Polynesia, my heart beats loud, and emotions get higher).

I agree, the Medi is another wonderful place to be. My favorite place over there is Croatia. And the French Riviera (I do better with the French than with the Italians).

So you know the States too? Where've you been there?

So you're German. Lol. No wonder your German is excellent. And here I thought you were non-native....

Washington, D.C. (just two days)
Florida (from north to south, from Pensacola to Key West)
Georgia
Indiana
Texas, from there drove to the west coast (Orgeon, Washington State), on the way I got to see the Grand Canyon
Rockies (Grand Teton, Yellowstone National Park)

What about you? What parts of the States did you visit?

Well, let's say South-German... (as far as local patriotism is concerned). Just joking [wink.gif]

I've been living in California for about two years, south of SF (Silicon Valley), and have visited and seen a lot of places in the States. Just never been in Mid-West and Dixie-Land.

My favorite place over there is the West Coast, esp. San Francisco.

Did you cruise around by Motorhome?

I did a couple of times, unforgetten a trip in Alaska (three guys tried to catch a salmon...), and the HWY No. 1 from Seattle to San Diego.

When have you been there?

Bah, I thought I could catch a picture of Schnee in here. Have you posted your picture here before?

I bet it's great. I'd love to visit California some time.

No. We rented a car and stayed in motels or rented apartments or with friends.

Neat. Alaska...... yet a place of interest to me.

The last time in 1998. Time to go again....

Sorry for the late reply. I was on a trip.
